Type of Undergrad: B.A. in Math/Econ from tiny liberal arts college
Undergrad GPA: 3.54 (terrible first year, 3.73 excluding it)
Type of Grad: PhD Micro I at UNC-CH
Grad GPA: High Pass (Top 15-200f the class receives an H, more or less a 4.00)
GRE: 800Q, 800V, 5.5AWA
Math Courses: Calc II-III (A,B), Discrete Math (A), Linear Algebra I (C+, retook for A-), Intro to Proofs (A-), Math Stats I-II (B+,A-), ODE (A-), Real Analysis I (B), PhD Metrics as an independent study with a math professor for math senior research (A)
Econ Courses (PhD-level): PhD Micro I (High Pass)
Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Intro Micro (A-), Intro Macro (A-), Intermediate Macro (B), Intermediate Micro (B+), International (A-), Labor (A), Environmental (A-), Development (A), Economic Statistics (A+), Metrics (A), I/O (A), Marxist Economics (A), US Banking Panics (senior seminar) (A)
Letters of Recommendation: Last year I got one from the professor I RAed for, one from a professor I took Metrics and Economic Statistics from (he was extremely impressed with my research project for the class), and one from another econ professor I didnt know all that well. All from my tiny liberal arts college, none well known.
Research Experience: Research assistant for professor at my school; her research is on the methodological shortcomings of the VSL (value of a statistical life) in common use (aggregating industry and occupation categories in various ways can cause the estimated VSL to vary wildly, and current aggregation methodology is fairly arbitrary).
Research Interests: Applied Metrics, Labor, Development, Public
SOP: a little over a page, last paragraph tailored to each school citing two or three professors, articles of theirs that I was interested in, and how they related to my research interests.
Concerns: Extremely inconsistent grades, low profile recommenders, came from a school that rarely places to Econ PhD programs.

Comments: Definitely not how I expected to find out. Asked if I could talk to some professors about the program/their research in late November (I was taking PhD Micro I at UNC and living in Chapel Hill at the time), graduate director agreed to set up some appointments, but it never happened. After winter break I asked if I could still do it and the graduate director agreed. Before the meetings with the professors she talked to me about the program as if I were already accepted, and when I asked her if I was in and she said yes. She said the formal acceptances won't go out until March (as usual), though.

I would think that an acceptance from Colorado, Davis, Arizona and NC State would be likely without that letter of recommendation problem.
