On this page I will post the output of different analyses I do. Use the links below to jump to a particular analysis. I have updated the data since I wrote the acompanying material for each section, thus the acompanying material is often incorrect. Also, for this version, 2009 profiles and results (but not roll call and admits) data is included. Sorry for any inconvenience. As always, feel free to contact me if you want the code or anything.

I think I created the hardest to read cross-tab I have ever seen. Look at column 4, the denominator is 9. That means 9 people applied to exactly 4 schools in the top 10.
Now consider row 2, column 4, which reads 2/9 (22.22%). This means that applicants who applied to 4 schools were accepted by 2 schools 2 times out of 9.
So in the past 2 years, of the applicants my program was able to read correctly, those who applied to exactly 7 or exactly 8 schools in the top 10 got in to at least one of them.

I think that this analysis will be completely void following the 2009 round, as the fact that applicants are aware of things like this might skew things...

Below I give a shot at it for top 20 schools

Question: If a student X is accepted to some school A, and I assume that means he is "better" than student Y who was rejected from school A, then if I think student X has a good chance for acceptance to any school B where student Y was accepted, given a choice of school A, what schools fit into the category of school B?

An attempt to express the answer to this question can be found here

This humble analysis is still in triple-extreme beta (and the url may change if it gets completed), but might be a way to pass the time. What you see is a circle of school names. The order is expirimental, and based on geography. The graph contains information from the past two application cycles. Clicking on a school turns it blue, and turns a subset of schools red, green, and, sometimes, brown. Schools that turn green are schools that rejected an applicant which was accepted by the school you selected. Schools that turn red are schools which accepted applicants which were rejected by the school you selected. Brown is the combination of red and green, I think.

So if you select UNC, you will notice that Wisconsin turns red! That is, some applicant was rejected by UNC but accepted to Wisconsin, so if you were accepted to UNC these last few days, that means you should be optimistic about your chances at Wisconsin!(?) Looking at the regular analysis for UNC, we see that the applicant was rejected by UNC's econ program and accepted to Wisconsin's ag-econ. So, ones initial optimism is lessened somewhat.

Question: If I give you a list of schools, can you do cross tabs such as those for your top 10? That is, what are my chances of being rejected by every school I applied?

This is basically a vanity list (here, the one being vain is me, Untitled). I am keeping my schools private, but as you can see, I applied to 13 schools. 4 times in the past have students applied to 10 of those (never has a tm student applied to 11 or more of the 13). Of those 4 times, never has a student failed to get into any schools.

The fact that students who applied to 7, 8, and 9 of the schools on my list failed to get accepted to any of them makes me nervous. PM me if you want a similar table for the list of your choice. Please let me know if you want the list of schools included or withheld (I will withhold your username, as it isn't a part of the analyses anyway). Any errors may or may not be corrected at anytime (this is just for fun).

I can also tell you which applicants fit into which category, and show you there profile. I am assuming there will be little interest in this, but unless I think of something else to look at in the data, there isn't many other questions I'm interested in.

Question: What schools are often considered reaches by TMers?

For this question I consider each applicants list of schools and order them from highest ranked to lowest ranked. I then record the names of the three highest ranked schools and their decisions. These I call the applicants reaches. I do the same for the lowest ranked schools, which I call the safeties. For display purposes (and so sorttable works nicely), I present the data in two graphs. The first graph discusses reaches. The first three columns are the number of accepts from a school, the number of applications from a school, and the percentage of accepts to applications. Notice this is different from the list above, because before I was throwing out waitlists, but here I am not. I am doing this because when addressing admissions ratio, the stress is placed on counting rejections. Here, the stress is placed on counting acceptances.

The fourth data column addresses how often a school was the highest ranked accept in an applicants profile. I think that if this is lower than similar schools similarly ranked, then it is a sign that the school is overvalued by TMers relative to its rank.

The fifth is how often a school was a reach.

The sixth is how often the school was a reach and accepted a student.

The seventh is the percentages of reaches accepted. This is the main result of this graph; again it can show which schools are overranked/underranked in that they accept students who don't percieve themselves as being as strong, or something like that.

The eigth is the percentage of time a school was an applicants reach compared to all the times the school was in an applicants profile. Again, this shows which schools are overranked/underranked relative to applicants feelinds. It also gives some idea which schools might be recieving relatively few reach applications.

The last is the percentage of time a reaching student was accepted compared to all accepts. If an applicant is looking for a safe reach, and can't decide between two schools, this column might help.

Again, the rankings are from econphd.net, except that if no tm applicants were recorded, it was removed. Waitlists, if noticed by the program, were not thrown out.

I can't believe how much information is in this chart. I love the percentages. For instance, Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Illinois all saw between 35% and 400f their applications as reaches (data column 8), but While Wisconsin and Ohio State accept over half (77% and 67%), Illinois only accepted 57%. For these three, at least, better schools get better reachers.

Some schools are never reaches, especially Duke, where zero of 39 applicants were reaching, but also Virginia, Pittsburgh, Georgetown, Vanderbilt, Johns Hopkins, and Minnesota. These schools will need to look at their applicants especially close to find good matches, because they can't rely on their ranking to draw students.

I could go on and on, and maybe will later. Although I may have personal reasons to see Iowa State in the top 5 in the last two data columns, that is clearly an artifact of the few applicants and few applications that they sent out. This issue of not having enough data shows up in many places.

Question: What schools are often considered safeties by TMers?

The fifth is how often a school was a safety.

The sixth is how often the school was a safety and accepted a student.

The seventh is the percentages of safeties accepted. This is the main result of this graph; again it can show which schools are overranked/underranked in that they accept students who don't percieve themselves as being as strong, or something like that.

The eigth is the percentage of time a school was an applicants safety compared to all the times the school was in an applicants profile. Again, this shows which schools are overranked/underranked relative to applicants feelinds. It also gives some idea which schools might be recieving relatively few reach applications.

The last is the percentage of time a safety student was accepted compared to all accepts. If an applicant is looking for a safe safety, and can't decide between two schools, this column might help.

Again, the rankings are from econphd.net, except that if no tm applicants were recorded, it was removed. Waitlists, if noticed by the program, were not thrown out.

Some schools are very often safeties (these are similar to the schools that are rarely reaches). Schools who are safeties more than 50% (data column 8) include Duke, Johns Hopkins, WUSTL, Georgetown, UCL, Caltech, Pittsburgh, Penn State, Virginia, and Michigan State (with BC just missing). These schools have in common that they are solid second tier schools that are near top schools (lse and oxbridge for UCL, Caltech is clearly the also-ran in California, WUSTL, Pitt, and Penn State are a bit below the rest of the upper-midwest, Pitt, JHU, Duke, and Georgetown are a bit below the top schools on the east coast).Indiana, Vanderbilt, Rutgers, Davis, Texas A&M, and North Carolina are all solidly ranked schools that are safeties less than 300f the time, and might have been better choices.

Picky schools might rarely accept safeties (Column 7). These seem to include Boston U, Texas, WUSTL, UCSD, Pitt, Penn, Michigan, and Northwestern (all 1/3 or less). Some very good schools accept over 750f applicants who apply where that school is a safety, even though they are safety schools often, including Georgetown, North Carolina, Penn State, and Caltech. Of special note is Virginia, who accepted 16 out of 16 safeties.

Column 9 shows how strong TM is, that all TM applicants who got into such strong schools as Georgetown, JHU, Arizona State, and WUSTL considered those to be safeties. On the other hand, relatively few who got into solid second tier schools such as Boston U, Maryland, and UCSD (which is first tier in some rankings) saw those schools as safeties (all had the percent of acceptances which were safeties at or below 20%).

Question: What schools are often considered reaches by TMers (using US News and World Report rankings)?

For this question I consider each applicants list of schools and order them from highest ranked to lowest ranked. I then record the names of the three highest ranked schools and their decisions. The fifth is how often a school was a reach.

The last is the percentage of time a reaching student was accepted compared to all accepts. If an applicant is looking for a safe reach, and can't decide between two schools, this column might help.

Here, the rankings are from USNWR, except that if no tm applicants were recorded, it was removed. Waitlists, if noticed by the program, were not thrown out. After the analysis was done, but before it was outputted to html, the order was shuffled, so this is academic fair use of USNWR info, and does not infringe on their IP. This randomization makes the graph slightly less informative, sorry. I could put the econphd.net rankings back in somehow, maybe.

Whereas before, Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Illinois all saw very similar percentages of reaches, now Wisconsin sees many more, and Ohio State many fewer, and Illinois practically none.

Texas has a high percentage of accepts that were reaches (data column 9). Duke is still rarely a reach, along with WUSTL< BC< Davis, Rochester, Vandy, Penn State, Georgetown, Pitt, and Michigan State (all had more than 10 applications and less than 10% reaches). Caltech and Brown still have few reaches as well.

Question: What schools are often considered safeties by TMers (using ranking by US News and World Report)?

Here, similar schools are often safeties Schools (safeties more than 50 0ata column 8) include WUSTL, Georgetown, Pittsburgh, Penn State, Michigan State, BC, BU, and Vandy (but no longer include Duke (44%), JHU (18%), CalTech (44%), Virginia (36%)). The big difference is JHU, which is now very rarely a safety.

Picky schools might rarely accept safeties (Column 7). These seem to include Boston U, WUSTL, UCSD, Michigan, and Northwestern (all 1/3 or less). Pitt and Penn no longer seem so picky, but CMU does. Some very good schools accept over 750f applicants who apply where that school is a safety, even though they are safety schools often, including Texas, Georgetown, North Carolina, Penn State, and Caltech. Virginia still accepts many safeties, as does Penn State and Vanderbilt.

Georgetown and WUSTL still show as accepting all students who applied as safeties (Column 9), as did Pitt. Still, relatively few who got into Maryland saw it as a safety.

Question: What are the acceptance and rejection rates of different schools by research interest according to tm (2007 and 2008 data)?

Note: Click on top of column to sort. Here I include applicants who note their research interest and include the word I've put in bold before each table. So if someone writes "anything but macro" or "I like to expiriment with monthly iota [ed note: I have no idea if iota data exists in finance] data in finance", they will be included in the wrong table(s). On the other hand, it is non-exclusive, so someone who says they are interested in IO and environmental will be included in both.

The rankings are from econphd.net, except that if no tm applicants were recorded, it was removed. Also, waitlists were thrown out.

One other thing I can do is given a GRE and GPA range, I can output which applicants fit into that category. I'm not sure how I could turn that into html output, it seems like a heavy task for javascript. But if you are interested, pm me the scores you are interested in. GPA ranges turn out to be too nearly meaningless for this to be very useful, but it is interesting enough.

I believe I have mentioned, but there is a chance that someone will want to continue this and I won't be around to help them. All the files needed are in the directory exept one. The perl script fgen generates the individual school tables, ggen generates the graph data, analyses generates this page, and index the index page. The js and swf files are properties of either me, or of the people noted in the file, who allow their work to be reused. The csv files can be edited, the first column is the school name, the second will be the filename when you run the program, additional ones are search terms. If you want to replicate this, you will also need a file I called controlfileusnwr.csv, which is just controlfile.csv resorted. forum2007 and forum2008 are html files in which I've pasted the TM forums tuff (there was a small amount of pre-processing). flare.json.txt is part of the graph data.
